Publishing Design: Exercises

Lectures

Week 1
01/04/2019
As usual first day routine, we were introduced to the module booklet and explained how this module would proceed and what was expected of us. He told us what we needed for the next week and what we were going to be doing.

Week 2
08/04/2019
This week's lecture was very entertaining. We went back to the roots of language and Mr.Vinod explained about the earliest civilisations. If you scroll down to my reflection, I will explain why I enjoyed the lecture.

Coming back to the point, Mr.Vinod explained the different civilisations and how each civilisation played a part in the creation of language and publication.

Week 3
15/04/2019
We started straight out with our exercise this week.

Week 4
22/04/2019
This week, we explored grid systems which we had some knowledge about from advanced typography. Mr.Vinod explained how the grid system was developed and why we need to use it. After that, we bang to work on our exercises.

Week 5
29/04/2019
This week, for our lecture, Mr.Vinod disused typography and it was a throwback to our first and second semesters. I realised, we don't really remember much except for the terms but our memories were refreshed and now we know how to calculate everything again.

Exercises

Week 2
08/04/2019
For the first exercise we had to create a mock up book according to the size of our actual book.

1.1 I decided to stick to the dimensions 18x21 cm.

1.2 Process of cutting

1.3 The book cut

1.4 Bonus: I cut my finger

Week 3
15/04/2019

This week in class, Mr.Vinod showed us the classic way of figuring out your margin. He also explained how to create signatures.

2.1 Vander Graff Margin method

2.2 Vander Graff digitalised

We then learnt how to create signatures the traditional way by folding an A3 sheet of paper into 16 sheets of paper.

2.3 Folded book

2.4 Unfolded pages

Week 4
22/04/2019
For our first exercise this week, we had to print spreads and then direct the margin, rows and columns.

3.1 Dissecting grids

We then had to create an animation on indesign that used geometric shapes and related to each other.

3.2 Thumbnails

3.3 Gif

Week 5
29/04/2019

This week, we did an exercises similar to last week where we had to create an animation using the grid system but this week we had to add an extra element that was a different colour.

4.1 Starting the gif

4.2 Creating the gif on photoshop

4.3 the final gif

Reflection

Week 1: Thus began the first day of second year, or in simple terms its semester 3 and I am very, very excited Publishing design is one of the things I would like to do as a profession even though I don't like to think far ahead. However, I hope I can keep my excitement and motivation up till the end of the semester.

Week 2: This week we talked about the olden civilisation and as you'll see in my book, I love all things weird and history is one of my favourite things to think about. I love hearing and reading about how the world came to be as time passed by. However, if I'd be given the chance, I'd like to add some information to what Mr.Vinod told us since he mixed up some facts. However, I now have a lot more stuff to read about once I get some time.

Week 3: This week, we went back in time and designed things the traditional way. We used the mathematician formula of finding out our margins and then created a signature. It was fun except I left my ruler and cutter at home so I had to borrow but ti was fun. Half way through it I imagined that I was somewhere back in the past with my old century clothes and just helping some nice old man with his signature making.

Week 4: This week, I was a bit confused when we had to dissect the grid but as I did it, I understood that grids are important even if you want to create a different type of layout. We then had to create a creative linked geometric gif which was confusing cos after a point, you don't see the movement because the eyes adapt but then Mr.Vinod approved of it and I uploaded it to my twitter instead of facebook since I don't use facebook.

Week 5: This week, during the exercise Mr.Vinod told me to start developing an eye to evaluate the relationship between the geometric shapes. I also understood from his feedback that each shape should be connected to one another.

Graphic Idea Notebook: A treasure of Solutions To Visual Problems

According to this book, pictures are not intended to be realistic illustrations of of specific subjects. there are certain categories of illustrations such as abstract, logical, subjective and instinctive. The book also explains how illustrations are created from taking a few keywords and basing your illustrations on those keywords.

When it comes to illustrations there should be some form or perspective. One way of giving perspective to visuals is by adding a background. The background can be based on a geographical setting. The setting should be be like a scene drop so it can be like a scene a generic landscapes or specific places that evoke recognition, or even symbolic objects ands backgrounds.
