INSTRUCTIONS

PROJECT

Week 7
15/10/2018
The first collateral we had to design was a poster.
1.2 Key artwork

1.3 First Attempt

1.4 Second Attempt

1.5 Third Attempt

1.6 Fourth Attempt

1.7 Fifth Attempt

1.8 Sixth Attempt

1.9 7th attempt

I then shortlisted the design I liked the most and added colour to them.

1.10 Final Design 1

1.11 Final Design 2

1.12 Final Design 3

1.13 Final Design 4

1.14 Final Design Chosen and approved. I chose this design because because I liked how the box contained the artwork and the text together, holding it together in one place showing the relationship between the two.

For the second collateral, I was torn between choosing a badge or a t-shirt so I made templates for both.

1.14 Badge Template

1.15 White t-shirt template with black text

1.16 White t-shirt template with coloured text
1.17 Black t-shirt white text

1.18 Black t-shirt with coloured text

The advanced typography project was linked with our Interactive Design project 2, where we had to create a microsite for our work.

1.19 First attempt at microsite.

1.19 Final for the microsite and link to: Microsite

FEEDBACK

Week 8: I was told to work on the actual layout first and to focus on alignment. I was also advised to not jump straight into colour or backgrounds and create layouts first.

REFLECTION

Experiences;
Week 8: I found that when it comes to the placement of text, some specific words are important and some aren't as important. It was tricky to arrange everything in a way where the poster informed people of what was important whilst still looking good.

Findings:
Week 8: I found that when designing a poster, you need to very carefully think where you're going to place your art work and text because everything has to work together in harmony. The different font sizes also have to be kept in mind because some information is vital to catch the eye of a person who will be reading the poster.

FURTHER READING

Design Elements: A Graphic Style Manual

The book talks about the elements involved in creating a good poster and how to choose the right type. One of the elements discussed in the book is type as information.

When it comes to presenting information, hierarchy must be established the information is presented systematically. Most often, information shows up in parts such as callouts, captions, and sidebars. These parts usually repeat themselves and appear in in the same space, usually supporting one another.

For a designer, the most essential part is to give information an order that allows the viewer to navigate through it. This order, is called 'information hierarchy' and is used on the level of importance the designer assigns to each part of the text. Importance means the part that should be read first and it also refers to the distinction of function.

Creating informational hierarchy applies the formal aspects of purely visual hierarchy to the parts of language present in the format. The distinguishable parts of the text refer to the parts that should be the main focus of the viewer, and if the viewer needs to see those parts.
