LECTURES

Lecture 9 Font Creation
22/05/2018
This week Mr.Vinod told us to study the Taylor's logo and figure out what was wrong with it. He told us to create our own font that we could use as the Taylor's logo. He told us to study the ten typefaces he had given us when considering what types of font's we wanted to make.
9.1 First Attempt at Taylor's Logo

This week we had no class since it was a public holiday.

Lecture 11 Final
05/06/2018
9.2 Final Composition

INSTRUCTIONS

FEEDBACK
Week 9
Mr.Vinod told me my font was quite good but the only problem was that the serifs weren't balanced. He told me that if one letter has a serif at the bottom, all the letters should have serifs underneath. He told me to study serif fonts and make the needed decisions.

Week 10
No feed back since no class.

Week 11
Mr.Vinod explained how to construct fonts and pointed out the mistakes in the construction of fonts that had been made. He explained that the thickness and length had to be in proportion to make a balanced looking font.

Typography: Typography Workbook:

The book talks about the development of hierarchy and the different ways hierarchy can be achieved in text. These are distinctions in space and scale, colour and hierarchy, and hierarchies within text.

The book defines distinctions of space and scale as one option of hierarchy. For starters, grouping related items together, or aligning them along in an axis establishes a sense of regularity to them. By shifting a specific item out of alignment, attention is called to it and this alerts the viewer to its importance over the elements that remain within the group.

The book explains that colour plays an important role in establishing hierarchy. Changes in weight, texture, value and rhythm also signify differences between elements, in addition to the difference implied by spatial separation. Smaller or lighter elements, may appear to receded or decrease in importance because they become less active. On the other hand, contest must be treated carefully, if all the elements appear very different, they appear equally important and the sense of hierarchy may be destroyed.

The book also states that all typographic elements within a space exist in a hierarchical relationship with others, ranging from most to least important. The way to establish hierarchy within text is by using captions, tables and lists.

Design: Type;

This book talks about how hierarchy can be achieved. It explains how hierarchy can be achieved by using one type family that has a wide range of many type faces.

The book defines typographic hierarchy as one of the greatest assets available to designers who want to create clear navigation through a layout. One way to achieve hierarchy is to use different and contrasting type families so different pieces of information will stand out more depending on the type family. Another way to achieve hierarchy is to pare down the range of typefaces and use contrasting weights from a well populated typeface family.

The book states that when an editor wants to achieve hierarchy, it is always good to choose a typeface for body text that has at least a roman, semi-bold and bold weight. In addition, it is also good to have italics available in case if a name or product needs to be emphasised.
