LECTURE NOTES
Lecture 1
27/08/2018
This was the first week of the second seamster. The class started with Mr.Vinod welcoming us back and explained the module break down. Once the brief was over, we learnt that there are different Typographic Systems such as axial, modular, dilatational, random, grid, transitional and bilateral. We were then told to present the information we learned.
1.1 Presentation for Typographic Systems
EXERCISES
Week 1
FEEDBACK
Week 1: None given since this was just an introductory class to the module.
Week 2: Mr.Vinod explained how some of my designs didn't adhere to the right system and asked me to change those. Whilst we was reviewing our designs, he explained how the random system must still communicate a message and that there must be a sense of readability. In terms of the modular system, he told us how there had to be a specific framework, with an amount of hierarchy,
Week 3: None, since there was no class.
Week 4: None, since there was no class.
Week 5: I was told that my letterforms had no relatable characteristics to the image I was using. I was told to dissect the image and find letters through that dissection. For the typo sexual exercise, I was told that there was so interplay between the text and the image.
REFLECTION
Experiences
Week 1: Since this was the first week of the second semester, everyone had a lot of energy but everyone was also worried since typography proved to very tricky in the previous semester and this semester we did not know what to expect.
Week 2: This week, went by very smoothly apart fro the changes that had to be made but no design is perfect in the first attempt. So far, I think I've adjusted into the flow of the second semester and this module.
Week 3: With this exercise, I became more aware about how type can be constructed from anything, even something as simple as fallen branches. I expected this exercise to be very tricky, and it was since its hard to dissect nature to find letters but even nature is aligned in a way, where you can find letterforms if you look hard enough.
Week 4: This week, it was very hard to find something that was still but had movement and something that had meaning to it. I had to roam around the city quite a lot to find something and did manage to find something. For me, the hardest part was trying to place the text somewhere where it still had its own presence and where it didn't get overshadowed the initial image.
Week 5: My initial thought this week was, "oh no, I'm screwed." I had to redo both my exercises and it was even harder to do the second time. The thickness of strokes is very confusing to figure out even with the help of the grid. As for the typo sexual exercise, that's just very tricky to figure out because it takes a certain amount of thinking to realise how to the text and image should work together.
FINDINGS
Week 1: I realised that presenting takes the living breath out of me and that it is something I have to get used to since we will be doing it a lot for this module.
Week 2: I realised that in comparison to last semester, I feel a lot less stressed about having to redo or fix my work because I've come to the realisation that no design is perfect in the first go. I also learnt that, when it comes to design systems, the main focal elements are the message, the readability snd the fact that the system is adhered to.
Week 3; I wouldn't say I realised but I learnt that design is really surrounding us in our daily lives and that it's all around. Mr.Vinod once mentioned, that you should be able to recognise design principles and elements around you and I think with this exercise, I've finally learnt how to do that.
Week 4: This week, we had to integrate text and images together which was not easy. When integrated the text, the typeface should compliment the image, the colour should work together in harmony and be visible but also not too visible.
Week 5: This week, I redid two exercises and I think I learnt more from redoing them. I'm not sure if I got them right but I do understand better. For the letterform exercise, I just wanted to find any letterforms and create them in anyway and did't focus on the fact that the characteristics of the image were what we needed to use to create letter forms. For the typo sexual exercise, I now understand that text needs to move wit the picture in a way that creates movements for the viewers eyes to understand what is happening gin the image.

Week 3
We were told to work from this week since it was a public holiday. We were instructed to find a picture that inspired us, place it into illustrator, change its colour scheme to monochrome and create letter forms from that picture.
3.1 This was the picture I took of fallen branches and stone. The main idea I got when I saw this was that the branches were overlapping in a way where they made their own little system.
3.2 I then drew a grid and began sketching out whatever letter I could make out
3.3 The letters I was able to find and construct were 'N, V, A, Y, F and L'
3.4 I then tried to fix and make the letters equal in their thickness and lengths.
3.5 Close up of letters
3.6 Final
After receiving my feedback, I decided to redo the exercise and this time I focused only only on the main branches that we were on the ground and traced out the characteristics of the branches.
3.7 retraced branches which are also my letterforms. The letterform is found were A, T, Y, V and L
3.8 Letterforms moved to a different art board (unrefined)
3.9 The lower set of letterform are the refined version
3.10 Close up of refined letterforms.
3.11 Final redone.
Week 4
Ww were told t work from home since it was a public holiday. The exercise we were given was to take pictures of something that inspired us but it had to have some form of movement. We were then told to merge that picture with text to create an interplay between the text and the picture.
4.1 This is the picture I used for this exercise.
4.2 I then changed it to black and white and played with the contrast levels until I was happy with it.
4.3 I then added the text towards the edge of the picture. My idea was to make the text look very faint in order to add some depth to the whole composition itself. The text I took was from a poem called 'Tiger" by William Blake which is about a man wondering why the tiger works the way it does. Since the picture is about a tiger hunting git prey, I wanted to make the text look very subtle to balance the harshness of the actual picture but still try to give it that meaning.
After receiving feedback, I redid the exercise since I was told that the picture had no contrast and that there was no interplay between the image and text.
4.4 Actual image taken outside of Sunday Hotel
4.5 Attempt 1 at redoing the exercise
4.6 Attempt 2 at redoing the exercise.
4.7 Third attempt

FURTHER READING
Typographic Systems:-
The book as its name suggests, talks about the different typographic systems. There are eight different systems which are:
1) Axial
2) Radial
3) Dilatational
4) Random
5) Grid
6) Modular
7) Transitional
8) Bilateral
The axial system is where elements have a direct relationship to each other through alignment along the axis and the message has an inertia sense of order. The radial system is where elements are organised to to extend from a central point of focus like rays. The dilatational system is where circles dilate or expand from a central point. The circles expand in regular or rhythmical increments from the centre of the circle. The random system consists of elements that are arranged without definite aim, pattern, direction, rule, method or purpose, but it is deceptively simple because the viewer imposes organisation on compositions even when it is unintentional. The grid is a system where vertical and horizontal divisions that organise and create relationships between elements. Grid system arrangements are usually formal and are intended to create visual order and economy in production. The transitional system of visual organisation is an informal system of layer and shifted banding. There are no interrelationships along an an axis or edge alignments, and elements move freely left and right. The modular system is dependent on standardised nonobjective elements or units that act as a group to hold and contain text. The bilateral system is the most symmetrical of the visual organisation systems. It consists of a single axis with lines of text centred on the axis.
Stop Stealing Sheep and Find Out How Type Works:-
This book talks about different typefaces and how different typefaces represent individual people. The book also talks about type families and the similarity and difference in the same typeface families.
Type also comes in families, while some weights might be used more extensively than others, there s no paternal and maternal dominance with typographic families. Each member of the family does its work regardless of status. Type family members include the bold, semi-bold, and italics etc.
There is specific use for each thorn family member and limits, for example, there is a certain limit to using the bold typeface. At small sizes, the spaces inside bold letters start filling in, making most words illegible.
Typographic Design: Form and Communication:-
The book talks about how all good typographic designs establish a hierarchy of the content presented, whether it is several levels of headlines, text, and captions.
The size, colour, and weight of a typeface help a reader determine what is most important. Designing the in motion uses the same components to create hierarchy such as time and behaviour. Time refers to the linear structure of animation, the order in which type enters the screen can indicate significance of the viewer. Behaviour refers to the speed and juxtaposition of elements with the sound also help create hierarchy.
