LECTURES

Lecture 1
24/09/2018
This weeks lecture was done by three group, one of the presenting was my own group. We were to told to create slides and present the history typography from Gutenburg to the present day.

1.1 Group Presentation Slides

We were then told to compile all the slides and presentations that had been given by all three groups.

1.2 Compiled slides

Lecture 2
01/10/2018

This weeks lecture was about how type faces are designed and the steps that must be taken before a designer sits to design a typeface. The steps consist of devoting a brief, finding inspiration and then defining the specific typographic parameters. After this, another lecture on the anatomy of type was given: explains the different parts letters have and how different letters have different parts.

Lecture 3
08/10/2018

For this project we had to combine our knowledge of what we had learned from the exercises and apply it to create a typo-sexual poster. Mr.Vinod explained Typo sexual as the relationship between the designer and the design or in this case the text. Keeping his words in mind, my first idea was to very literally use a man who looks like he's thinking and place the text inside his head.

1.1 Drawn silhouette of man thinking.

1.2 I masked the words 'typography typo sexual exhibition' into the man's head but I didn't like how it looked so I tried it again with a different approach.

1.3 This was my second attempt, where the image had more colour and I used a different typeface, The second art board has the twisty lines on top to portray the frustration a designer has when it comes to designing. However, Mr.Vinod told me it still wasn't good enough and that I still didn't quite understand.

1.4 So I went back to thinking and instead of using a man who was thinking, I decided to draw my assumption of a designer. I kept him headless on purpose because my idea was that the text would appear where his head would be. (My inspiration for the clothes was Mr.Vinod since he usually wears a simple t-shirt and jeans.)

1.5 I then added the text but I wasn't content with it and at this point I was quite confused with that to do. But, an idea hit me where I thought about masking some kind of design onto the text and since this is the typography module, I decided to mask newspaper into the text.

1.6 Masking the newspaper and together

1.7 Newspaper masked text and drawing.

1.8 I then added a stroke around the text.

After completing this, my initial thought was that this was too simple and portrayed diseigners as very played back and simple so I wanted to use the same approach but with a more sophisticated image of designers. I thought about how designers are also tasked with the job of presenting their designs and explaining what lead to their decisions.
1.9 I once again illustrated my take on a much more formal looking designer.

1.10 I went with the same approach of the text appearing where the head would but aligned in more centred way.
1.11 I then added a pentagon to the text to make the text look like a thought because I felt like the text was floating in mid air.

1.12 PNG versions of all final designs.

After receiving my feedback, it was clear that I still wasn't meeting the requirement needed so I continued with another idea. Mr.Vinod explained that the final composition had to look like one artwork that was all meant to be together. Keeping that in mind, I ventured forth again.

1.13 Reference taken from etsy.com (I used the elephant in this artwork for my own artwork.)

1.14 Elephant masked with the flowers.
1.15 Text appearing from the elephants trunk. However, since this artwork was going to be used in Project 2, as well, we were advised to create something that we could display on any material such as pages or t-shirt and posters.

1.17 Image reflected and placed on illustrator

1.18 Text appearing from the elephants trunk.

1.19 I tried adding a shape to make it look like the elephant was holding a ball with the words in it.

1.19 Final works in PNG

After receiving my feedback, it was evident that the only choice I had left was to use a person so that what I did.

1.21 Image masked and placed on photoshop

1.22 Adding the text 'typo' to the back of the figure (Typeface used: Garamond)

1.23 Adding the words 'typo sexual exhibition' (Typeface used: Futura)

1.24 Final design

FEEDBACK

Week 6: Mr.Vinod explained that for project 1, the text and artwork must be integrated. He explained that the word typo sexual refers to the relationship and intimacy between the designer and their artwork. The artworkmust represent the desiger, the artwork and the relationship between the two.

Week 7: Mr.Vinod told me that the work was not what the was looking for and to look at the MIB again. He said that the artwork was very crude and needed a lot of refinement and that the overall composition did not have the intimacy between the designer or the artwork.

REFLECTION
Experiences
Week 6: I have very few words to sum up my experience, this was very hard but became fun once I got an idea. Mr.Vinod explaining what typo sexual was helped a lot in coming up with an idea. One misconception I had was that I thought we had to create a logo but Mr.Vinod told us to think about it as a logo. One of the reasons this was hard was because there were no online examples about what 'typo sexual' is, which made it tricky but also hard since we were tasked to do something that wasn't very common.

Week 7: The artwork chosen, has to be very refined s it fits with the text. The artwork must match to the text and the typeface used. The two need to work together and become one art piece. This is the hardest thing because only specific things work and where I thought things worked together, Mr.Vinod did not which lead to a lot of frustration.

Week 8: This week, I realised that the best way to go about this project, would be stop using objects and just use a person. I found, that using a person made things a lot easier and wished I had just chosen a person from the beginning.

FINDINGS
Week 6: I found myself quite stressed with this project because I couldn't come up with an idea. Mr.Vinod always tells us to look around at other people's work and when I did that, I saw that my classmates were either focusing on the sexual part of typo sexual or or items related to typography such as typewriters and books. With this project, I realised just how hard it is to portray what a designer does and how they do it.

Week 7: I think, it was my own clouded judgment and the fact that I kept resisting and refusing to use a person. I found that, I tend to get a lot of ideas at one time and instead of sorting my ideas out, I just start working on them. I also found, that I tend to want to break away from the trend that set in my class, and want to break away from it and this ends up in me struggling.

Week 8: I found that, the next time I start a project, I need to take a step back and breathe before I start working. I also realised that following the trend isn't is wrong and its okay to try new things but not get carried away with doing something different. For this object, if I had stopped and just thought before working, then thing would've been a lot more easier.

FURTHER READING
Typography Teaching Experience: Typex:

The books talks about what elements students are introduced when they start designing posters. The most important element is type-families, the social-historical context in which they were conceived, and their functional and constructive aspects.

The opportunity to create a poster is also an initial approach to the design process from a theoretical mindset, with technological, historical and cutting edge references. The aim is to introduce a conceptual component and some working methodology, the development of delivery platforms and fundamental concepts which are applicable to to design, whilst also highlighting the communicative and artistic potential of text. The concept of the poster is not specifically related to typography, but still related to design, such as hierarchical structuring, form and counter form, rhythm, visual harmony and visual tension, symmetry composition and balance.
