LECTURES

Week 4
20/09/2018
This week, Mr.Shamsui gave a lecture about type on screen. He explained how easy to was to present type of screen now since there are many fonts to choose from and how there are many we bond services now such as Adobe Typekit and Google Fonts. He explained that it was very hard to present type on screens in the old days since there was a very limited number of fonts available such as Ariel, Helvetica or Times New Roman, etc.

INSTRUCTIONS

PROJECT

Week 4
This week we were going to be designing our own landing pages so Mr. Shamsui told us to make five sketches before hand and think about what we wanted our landing page to be about. I chose the Lord of the Rings as my topic.

My first set of sketches were not approved by Mr. Shamsui and he told me to redo them and look at different websites before I started designing my landing page.

1.1 First set of sketches

1.2 Final Sketch

The aim fo my website was to  create a place where the user could come to purchase the books by signing up and creating an account.

1.3 Final Design

FEEDBACK

Week 4: When Mr. Shamsui first saw my sketches, he told that I had to have a goal in mind about what the landing page would be about. He told me to look at different websites and see how their landing pages are designed. He told me that my first sketches were for a more interactive website. He told me to include a logo and a footer to website and also to consider alignment.

Week 5: The design looks outdated. The website tagline in the image on the top is not clear. Call-To-Action is not clear as well. No proper text formatting. No margin in the design. The navigation is close to the edge of the border. Footer is poorly done

REFLECTION
Experiences

Week 4: This week was stressful hands down. My sketches were rejected and I didn't really have a plan and the project had to be finished in class so there were too many things to to. This week I learnt, that designing a landing page is not easy. Everything has to be places perfectly and there has to be enough information but not too much information. I also learnt about how colours look on screen and how they look together and the relationship between colours and the text.

Findings

Week 4: I realised this week that I sometimes tend to start working and not think about how I want to work. This was proven by my sketches, I was so eager to design that I didn't stop to thinking about the basics such as who am I designing the website for, what is the purpose of the website, etc. I realised that a lot of thought and precision goes into making a landing page and that everything has to work together for a good landing page to be made.

FUTHER READING

Web Style Guide:Basic Design Principles for Creating Websites

The booms walls about page design and what makes a good page design along with what good page design can do.

Starting of the book explains how people expect clarity, order and trustworthiness from information resources on the web and how effective page design provides all this. The book explains how spatial organisation of graphics and text on the webpage can engage users with graphic impact, direct their intention, prioritise the information they seek and make their interactions with the website more enjoyable and efficient.

The book further explains how page design creates visual logic and seeks optimal balance between visual sensation and graphic information. Without the visual impact of shape, colour and contest, pages are graphically uninteresting and will not motivate the viewer. Dense text documents without contrast and visual relief are also hard to read on low resolution screens. However, without the depth and complexity of text, highly graphic pages risk disappointing the user by offering a poor balance of visual sensation, text information and interaction.
