Brand Corporate Identity: Project 2

Lectures

Week 1
02/04/2019
We were introduced to Ms.Lilian who briefed us on the module. She assigned us with quite a few tasks and told us what we had to do. So far this module consists of of making logos and analysing different logos. For our first eject, we have to make a presentation explaining what brand identity is, what a brand is and what branding is. We also need to analyse an already existing logo related to the three topics we had to research about. We also needed to find 20 logo designs and create 20 logos for our own personnel brand.

Week 2
10/04/2019
Ms.Lilian gavels a lecture on brand history and showed us examples of certain brands and their first logos and how they got to those logos. This was important since we're developing our own logos and need to think before we proceed with the development.

Week 3
17/04/2019
This week we went through an online article talking about the seven different types of logos.

Types of Logos:
  1. Lettermark: typography based and only uses the initials.
  2. Wordmarks: Font based logo that focuses gonna business name alone.
  3. Pictorial Marks: an icon for graphic based design. It’s probably the image that come to mind when you think ‘logo.’
  4. Abstract logo: a specific type if pictorial logo, it’s an bract geometric form that represents your business.
  5. Mascot: its a great way to create your very own spokesperson or spokes character. A mascot is an illustrated that represents your character your company.
  6. Combination mark: A combination is comprised of a word mark or letter mark and a pictorial mark, abstract mark or mascot. The picture and text can be laid out side by side or stacks on top of one another.
  7. Emblem: consists of a font on the inside of a symbol or icon.
When to use a a letter mark or word mark?
  1. A letter mark logo is used if the business name is too long.
  2. A wordmark is a good decision if you’re a new business and need to get your name out there.
  3. A word mark is a good idea when if you have a distinct business name that will stick in the mind 0of the consumers.
When to use picture and symbol logos?
  1. A pictorial mark is effective when you want to convey what your business does graphically.
  2. Abstract marks allow you to create a completely unique image for the business.
  3. A mascot is often appealing to young children or families and has an advantage in benefiting customer interaction.
When to use a combination or logo mark?
  1. A combination mark is a great choice for pretty much any business out there. It’s a versatile, usually unique and the most popular choice of logo.
  2. An emblem’s traditional look might be favoured by lots of public agencies and schools but it can also serve any up and coming private business quite well, especially in the food and beverage industry.

Project 2

Week 2
10/04/2019
Today's the day we had to show our first go of sketches to Ms.Lillian. For my brand idea, I wanted to go a step crazy and create a dragon adopting business. My idea is that I run a pet shelter that specialises in providing services for adopting dragons. I struggled with a few names but after talking to Ms.Lillian I got a better idea.

1.1 Brief on pre planning of brand.

Feedback

Week 2: Ms.Lilian liked my brand idea and told me to figure out what type of illustration and typeface I would like to choose and then start making more sketches based on those two things. She told me to think about a certain art syle and to look up dragons in medieval times and look at up at that as reference and to gain some idea.

Week 3: Ms.Lilian told me I had to develop a certain art style of whether I wanted realistic looking or cartoon like dragons and after discussing I chose the more realistic looking. We also discussed how the logo could contain certain elements of dragons such as wings and tails and horns. She also told me to decided what age of dragon I wanted, a younger looking one or an older looking one.

Week 4: This week, I think I finally got a clear direction of which way I wanted to go after my consultation and that was dragon hatchlings since they fit the image I was going for. Ms.Lilian and I discussed the logo I had sketched and she told me how I need to make something that was easily replicable.

Week 5: This week, Ms.Lilian and I finalised the dragons and sketches and decided which ones needed to be worked on. She told me I had to create a simple looking logo since I had too many textures and details on my dragons and needed to figure out where I wanted to place my brand name.

Reflection

Week 2: The reason I didn't do well for my presentation was because I spent most of my time drawing sketches. I like to sketch and mis managed my time and I don't think it was worth it but I was able to think about my brand in my head a lot which might prove to be helpful later onwards.

Week 3: I struggled a bit with the development of my logos this week because I came up with something more different and tried a bit of a different art style but still went back to the more realistic detailed looking dragons. I think for me, I've read too many books and researched too much and thats why I'm a bit more biased when it comes to the more detailed looking dragon. However, I struggle a bit with the drawing even though it may not seem that way but so far all the sketching is helping my drawing skill so I guess the struggle is paying off.

Week 4: This module, not the module just some situations and things that have been said have left me demotivated. I know, sometimes I can be a bit blur or a bit more blur but I always manage to pull through as times goes on. I don't usually get demotivated because I enjoy the challenge and the struggle but this module had me thinking I wasn't capable of doing much when I know I'm usually do manage to pull through at the end.

Week 5: This week, I think I reached the peek of being demotivated to the point where I rolled into a little ball. I don't doubt myself, I try not to doubt myself because negativity is bad for the soul. However, one thing that keeps me motivated is the support from my lecturers because they always manage to push me in directions and in ways and get me to do things I never thought I'd be able to do. My goal for next week is to not curl into ball and to finally have my break through.
