Minor Project: Earth Ships and Build for Tomorrow
LECTURES
Lecture 1
26/08/2019
For our first class this semester, we were asked to look up two terms: social entrepreneurship and earth-ships. Social entrepreneurship is when a person or organisation creates a business or product for the sake of helping the general public and environment. An earth-ship is solar panel home made out of reused and recyclable materials such as tyres, sand bags and discard glass. The earth-ship is Malaysia was built to help aid the temuan people of the orang asli tribe.
For our first task, we were split into groups and asked to present about social entrepreneurship and earth-ships.
Week 3 - Week 7
09/09/2019 - 07/10/2019
Our First Course of action was to come up with pre production slides that would have all our ideas and concepts.
1.3 Production slides compilation
1.4 Mock Presentation
REFLECTION
Week 1: For the first class I was expecting it to be like our seniors' project where they had to create something design based but instead we're doing something very different. From what I understood, we have to design a campaign and create something that will bring awareness to this new concept of sustainable living. This project also has impeccable timing considering how the amazon forest is burning and perhaps educating mankind on the damage humans are causing to the Earth slowly send destruct
Week 2: This week, were given a presentation by Ruben Cortes who explained what the Earthship was and how it functioned. After listening to his presentation we were given a clear, proper idea of what the Earthship and its systems were. We also understood that we needed to promote the Earthship in a way where it would attract people,e to be more inclined towards the system and so for our first idea we came up with an infographic.
Week 3: At this point, we started filling up our google document sheet by defining the challenges and by figuring out how we would conquer these challenges. Mr.Mike at this point told us that we had to start collecting data for our data collection and empathy. Since we had our target audience established which was the youth, we had to come up with questions and see who we would interview.
Week 4: This week, we visited the planter house box in Bangsar which is a modern version of an Earthship and house that incorporates the systems into an everyday house. Mr.Seamus gave us a tour of the house and explained why it was built the way it was. Along the way, they also urged to eat some of the vegetable that were green in the house.
Week 5: This week, we started heading out for interviews and we interviewed shops that were only focused on selling and promoting sustainable living. Our first stops were Eat, Shoots and Roots and The Nude Zero Waste store. We were questioned them and gained insights about their opinion on the problems the Earth faces and asked them their opinion on the Earthship and what would be a good way to promote it. They both told us that social media is a good way to promote since it catches the attention of many.
Week 6: This week, we continued our interviews and went to the World Animal Day where we interviewed whoever we could and our social media influencer. From the responses we got, many liked the concept of the Earthship but told us we had to think about how we would market it and to remember to describe it as easy and accessible to everyone since people are hesitant to make such a big change and would be more willing to take baby steps.
Week 7: This week, after talking to Mr.Mike, he told us that a simple video would not be enough and we needed something more bigger and gave us the idea of coming with an event/ festival which would promote the Earthship and attract many people.
Week 8: This week, Kitty and Xiao Shi started working on the key artwork and began illustrating for the art direction and we also started brain storming to come up with a name.
Week 9: This week Kitty and Xiao Shi were still working on the art work and we were able to finalise the name of our event which would be Little Big City.
Week 10: This week, I did not go to class but Farzana instructed May and I to start working on the website and contents which we brain stormed and did together. For our website, she told us we had to make it for the post event so after people had attended the event they would access the website.
Week 11: This week, Farzana instructed me to start working on the map. When she gave me the instructions. I informed her then that I would not be able to match the art style our group had chosen since my personal art style is very different. However, I still tried.
Week 12: After seeing, the first attempt at the map. Farzana disapproved saying it did not match our art style and so I looked the key visuals the other members had made and traced those on illustrator to be able to somewhat create a consistent design. Next week was also our mock up presentation so it was very stressful since I could not match the art style. I had asked if I could be given something else such as the mock ups and if someone else could do the map but I was told to do the map.
Week 13: This week was our mock presentation and I somehow managed to come up with a map that matched the art style and during our presentation, we also got Mr. Mike's approval on the map. He told us to summarise the content of our slides and to focus more on showing visuals. I made refinements to the map of design and sent them for approval.
Week 14: This week was our final presentation which we presented to Mr.Mike and to a panel of external judges. However, the map had been changed and was redone by another group member since the map I had made still did not meet the standards of my groups graphic. Due to this reason, I could not present to the panel of judges but we managed to get this module finished and it was a wrap. The judges told us they loved our graphics and the credit to that goes to the people in charge on art direction since they ddi a really good job.
