PROJECT 1

Week 1

Monday 06/01/2020
Problem:
-The first task assigned was to create a somewhat wall mura. The left wall would be used to advertise the Malaysian Airports and the right wall would be used to advertise the VM2020. The problem faced was finding the right images to use for the wall.

Actions:
-The first step to do was to create a concept that would go for each wall. Since the  right wall was to promote Malaysian Tourism, the idea for the concept was to highlight places and events happening in Malaysia, that could be showcased to the passengers.

Result:
-Left wall: the concept for the left wall which was to promote the Malaysian Airport was to showcase three images in a sequence.

-The first image would be off a plane to highlight how the passengers have landed in Malaysia, the second would show the inside of the airport to create a sense of “you are here” and the final picture would show what the outside of the airport would look like to create an air of suspense of what the Malaysian Adventure will be like.

-Right wall: for the right wall which is to promote VM2020, there are two prospective concepts. The first concept is to highlight spots in KLsuch as the Petronas Twin Towers, Batu Caves and Masjid Jamek. Each of the images will have a catchy phrase with them such as “Looking for a place where you can shop till yoo drop? Visit the Petronas Twin Towers.”

-The second concept was to highlight an event that is listed on the VM2020 which is the RainForest Music Festival which happens in Sarawak. The reason for choosing Sarawak was because most foreigners only know Malaysia for its beaches and not its culture.

Problem: Salvage and edit Paktin Serdang Event Pictures. The problem was that there were a some pictures that were over exposed whilst others were extremely blown up or even blurry.

Actions: The course of action was to find 20 pictures from each folder and start editing them on lightroom.

Result: The result was 40 edited pictures from the event.

Problem: Salave and edit more pictures from the Paktin Serdang event but focus on the
folders that have bowling and outside sports.

Action: In comparison to the previous pictures, the new one had more issues
than before since they were extremely dark and grainy. In order to fix this, more lightroom
settings had to be played with such as texture and
clarity and by 6:15, we had another 30 more pictures.

Result: There were 32 freshly edited pictures from bowling and the outdoor event.

Problem: The task of the day was to find logos of all the airlines in the world and copy paste them
into a psd file.

Action: The first course of action was to find a list of all airlines and then to start finding the logos of
the airlines and copy paste them into a psd file. Finding some logos proved to be a bit challenging
since three wasn't a png available or the current updated logo wasn't available.
Result: The results for the first task were airlines logos all compiled inside the photoshop file and
exported for web.

Problems: To write an article talking about the Sarawak Cultural Festival. In between the article
writing, more airline logos had to be found from a specific list.

Actions: The first course of action was to plan out the points of the article and then start researching
on those topics before writing the article. Since the article was about the Sarawak Cultural  Festival,
the experience one would gain had to be described. Since it was the Cultural Festival, the ethnic
tribes and their history had to mentioned as well. For the airline logos, the remaining specific logos were found and copy pasted into the psd file.

Result: The result was a 1000 word article talking about the Sarawak Cultural  Festival, the
experience, the tribes, how the lifestyle of the tribes was so deeply connected to nature and how the
village serves as an eye opener. As for the logos, they were compiled and sent off to be used in
whatever way they were needed.

Week 2
Monday
13/01/2020
Problem: I was assigned another writing task and the topic was to write about World Braille Day.

Actions: Before I started writing my article, I had to look into World Braille Day and see who and what it was celebrated for. To my surprise, World Braille Day wasn’t about celebrating braille or creating awareness for those of us who are blind, instead it celebrates the birthday of the man who created Braille. I spent the whole day of monday reading and researching about Louis Braille and how he invented the system and why he invented the system.

Results: By the end of the day, I had gathered  enough information to start writing the article and had figured out my writing guidelines and structure. All that was left now was to start writing the article.

Tuesday
14/01/2020
Problem: Today was the day I was going to start writing the article. However, with writing, the first sentence is always the hardest to write since it gets everything flowing. Once I got that down, the words flew out of my mind.

Action: There was only one action once the writing started, to write and to not stop. Since the article
was mainly about telling the story of the creator of Braille and how the code came to be, the words
typed out quite easily,

Results: By the end of the day, I had finished the article and after getting my feedback, I amended it
in the way it needed to be and that was the end of article of number 2.

Problem: Finding pictures for the article.

Action: To go with the article, I had written, I now had to find pictures. The pictures had to
correspond with the content of the article. Since I had personally been to the Sarawak Culture
Festival, I had quite a lot of pictures and started to look through those to find the right pictures that
matched the content of the article.

Results: After a lot of scrolling, pictures that corresponded with the article had been found, salvaged

Problem: Today, the task was to do a user test for the VM2020 website using different browsers. I was assigned to test the website using safari and opera.

8.1 VM2020 on Safari

8.2 VM2020 on Opera

Action: We were given a checklist sheet and since I was doing two browsers, I tested the user ability for both safari and opera simultaneously. The website worked better in opera and had some glitches in safari and also lacked the download icons.

Result: The result was the checklist being completed with the user test results for both safari and opera. Surprisingly, safari had more glitches than opera, there was only failure for both the browsers which was found in all other browsers such as google-chrome and firefox.

Friday

No work today since the company had gone for a day of team building so we were given a day off.I worked on finishing off the remaining jpegs which I had not been able to find the day before.

Week 3
20/01/2020
Problem: We were asked to go food hunting for the Vm2020 website and were given a list of local delicacies that we had to find as well as taking their picture from multiple angles.

Actions: Our list had the following food options: yoo char kwai, porridge, fish head noodle soup, lontong, chee chong fun and yoeng tau foo. This task was assigned with Nadia and Irfan, the three of us took all sorts of pictures, trying to capture the dish from all angles. We left around 10am to embark on this food hunt and it took us the whole day since the yeong tau foo was hard to locate but we located it and our mission was complete.

Results: We had found all the foods, eaten them and had photographed them for the VM2020 website.

Problem: Trace out the convergence logo.

Actions: For the logo, I only had to trace out the swirls which surrounded
the logo, which was a swirl shape. After tracing the shapes out, I then had
match the colours of the traced shapes to that of the logo which was a
gradient of yellow to orange to a deeper orange.

Results: The end result was traced out shapes with the same colour
gradient submitted as transparent pngs and ai file.

Problem: Interview questions based around Chinese New Year.

Action: True and false questions based around Chinese New Year had to be prepared which would be used in an interview with Sarah Liann. The questions had to be simple and quirky in a way, to test the actress’s knowledged on Chinese New Year. A total of 25 questions were made which asked questions about the Chinese Zodiac and superstitions regarding Chinese New Year. I tested the questions out on a fried to double check that they were all correct and easy to answer whilst also getting the brain to think.

Results: By the end of the day, 10 true and false questions had been shortlisted, edited and were ready to be used for the interview.

Thursday
23/01/2020
Problem: Find pictures that go with the Sarawak Article.

Actions: The Sarawak article had been edited and was ready to be posted but just need to be reviewed and for the pictures to be reviewed. I was instructed to read through the article and see if there were anymore pictures that could be added and where they could be added. After reading through it, I remembered I had some more pictures that went with the article and so I edited those and sent them along to be added in the article.

Results: The end result was having fifteen new potential pictures for the article which consisted of food pictures and of the sarawak cultural festival.

Problem: User Testing, Petronas Event and Chinese New Year illustration.

Actions: Since there were many problems to be conquered today, the actions to solve them had to be
taken step by step. The first step was to test out the VM2020 website again using safari and opera and
list down any issues with it. The second step was to assist my colleague in finding activities for the
Petronas event which has a Great Gatsby theme. The third and final course of action was to create a
greeting card for Chinese New Year greeting card which would be sent out.

Results: The few errors with the VM2020 website had been pointed out, some more activities for the
Petronas event had been found and the illustration for Chinese New Year had been made and had
even been sent out to as greeting card.

Problem: PNGs for the event stage mockup

Action: Since one of my colleagues was building the mock up for the stage of the event and what it
would like. I was asked to find pngs that would go with the event which is themed around denim and
takes inspiration from the wild west. Keeping that in mind, I looked at wild western scenic design
and started hunting for the pngs.

Result: By the end of the day, I had found found quite a few pngs which would’ve suited the event such as horseshoes, beer glasses, hay, a scarecrow, a wagon and even a wanted poster etc.

Problem: Video Editing

Action: My colleague and I were grouped together to edit an interview video that had been conducted using the chinese new year questions I made last week. We split the work up in the sense that she would edit the video and I would add the subtitles later onwards.

Result: Since we had split the tasks up, I was waiting for her to pass me the video so I could get started on the subtitles

Thursday
30/01/2020
Problem: Video Editing

Actions: As I was waiting for the video, I decided to write down all the subtitles before hand so I could save time when the time to actually add the captions came. However, there was a little twist, turns out we did not really need to add subtitles but more like descriptive text which my colleague did as she edited the video.

Result: The video had been submitted by my colleague.

Problem: Proposal Content and Design Update

Actions: I was assigned the task of updating a proposal for an event called KIDURO and was instructed to redesign the layout and to update some of the information and the text in any way I saw fit. The current design was already good enough but I changed it in ways where I thought it could be improved.

Results: The proposal actually took quite awhile to do but I managed to finish it up and submit it by the end of the day.

Problems: Update Kiduro proposal

Actions: After getting the feedback for the proposal, there were a few minor changes that had to be such as some spelling errors and some tiny things from the design header had to be taken away but apart from that it was all good.

Results: Once the changes were made, the proposal was good to go.

16.1 After getting my feedback, I had to make a few changes

Problem: Create a Maju Mall Directory

Actions: We were assigned a task to list and categorise Malaysian brand that would later be used as a
mall directory for the Maju Mall Junction. Since I was grouped together with Nadia, we split the list
between the two of us and started listing and categorising.

Results: By the end of the day, we had an excel sheet with the names, categories, social media and
what each of the local brands specialised in listed down.

Problem: Create Layout for Experiential Content tab.

Actions: For the VM2020 website, a new tab was being added called experiential articles, where writers shared their experiences. The content was ready but a layout was needed. I started by making the layout on indesign.

Results: By the end of the day, I had two layouts made on indesign, a one column and two column.

18.1 Layout using one column

18.2 Two column design

Thursday
06/02/2020
Problem: Creating Layout using Adobe XD

Actions: After I made the layout in indesign, I had to show it to the CEO who advised me to make it in Adobe XD. This was a little problem since I had never used Adobe XD before but I started to figure it out and made the layouts on Adobe XD.

Results: By the end of the day, the decision was made to use the one column layout since the layout was for a mobile phone and one column looked better.

Problem: Mocking up website.

Actions: Since the layout had been finalised, I then had to mock up the webpage design in a way
similar to the current VM2020 layout. That meant getting everything right from the line height to the
spacing and once that was done I had to get on with the features. For the features I decided on
adding image sliders which would give visuals to the places in the article and an instagram post to
showcase how ‘instagrammable’ the places are. With that I also added a feature where certain names
or places in the article would be highlighted and would give information when clicked.

Results: By the end of the day, I had the first mock up ready and good to go but now I had to add the
features and get the approval of the CEO.

Problems: Creating the layout for the second article.

Actions: Since the features and the layout had been approved. I moved onto creating the layout and features for the second one. Since the second article was a bit smaller, I had to make some changes to the layout but this way I knew which layout worked for which kind of article.

Results: The second article was done and now I could move onto the third and fourth.

Problem: Continuation of article layouts for the third and fourth article.

Actions: WIth the third and fourth article, I got a bit lucky since my
colleague assisted me in finding the pictures so I didn’t have to spend so
long on them and was able to finish the layout for both of the articles and
my colleague had helped in finding pictures for the third article.

Results: By the end of the day, I had completed the third article completely but still had to finish up the fourth article and get started on the fifth.

Problem: Finding pictures and adding features to the fourth and fifth article

Actions: Today, I was determined to finish up the fourth and fifth articles so I started the day by laying out the fifth article and then looked for pictures for both articles and finished up adding the features to the mock up. I was given another five articles to create the layout for the mock up.

Results: I had finished the fourth and fifth article mock ups.

Problem: Finishing up the ninth and tenth article

Actions: I was determined to finish up the ten articles today but because I knew I only had two left, I
took my time but pushed past the lazy feeling and finished the ten articles.

Results: I had finished the ten articles and now all that was left was to wait for the remaining five
articles.

No new tasks assigned

Tuesday
18/02/2020
Problem: Updating the Maju Mall directory.

Actions: Since there was still no new work assigned, I just worked on updating the mall directory.

Results: By the end of the day, there were a few new brand that had been found and added to the
google spreadsheet.

Wednesday

Problem: Finding and sorting out the pictures for the experiential articles.

Actions: Today, the experiential article layout had been reviewed again since the developing team were going to start coding them soon. Due to this, the pictures had been purchased from istock and I spent the day organizing them in the correct order. There was a little issue half way because there was only a limited number or images that could be purchased from shutter stock so those images had to be replaced with pictures from shutterstock.

Results: By the end of the day, the pictures had been purchased and had been aligned with their corresponding articles in the order they were intended.

Thursday
20/02/2020
Problem: Writing captions for the pictures

Actions: SInce I was the one who had made the layout for the articles, it was also up to me to write captions for each of the pictures. The captions had to be facts or experiences from the article. I spent the whole day writing captions for each of the pictures.

Results: By the end of the day, I had finished writing the captions but had to wait the next day to double check with the copywriters.

Friday
21/02/2020
Problem: Amending the pictures

Actions: Since the captions were completed, I double checked them with the copywriter and made
changes to the ones that needed to be changed.

Once I had completed the captions for good, I then helped my colleague in finding pictures for this
article she was doing the layout for and then writing captions for those two articles.

Results: Once I had finished the two tasks, I had no other work assigned to me since most of the
office was out for  meetings so there wasn’t much to do.

Week 8
Monday
24/02/2020
Problem:
To create a workflow for the write your own article section for the new
VM2020 website.

Actions: I was told to sketch out the the workflow and as I did, I asked the content writers and planned it out with my supervisor and the CEO.

Result: By the end of the day, the workflow had been sketched out and i could start creating it on adobe XD.

Tuesday
25/02/2020
Problem: Creating the mobile version.

Actions: I started making the mobile version first, since I found it easier to do and since the screen size was smaller, I thought the workflow would be easier to layout.

Result: By the end of the day, I had finished the mobile layout.

REFLECTION

Week 1: For the first day, I didn't know what to expect since this was my first internship experience and the only example of an internship I had was used of a film called the intern. However, the work environment was very relaxed so far and the work assigned was doable and had me thinking in whole different mindset compared to university.

In university, my main goal is to create something the lecturer will like but during my first week, I had to think in a way where my boss and the client would be pleased. At work, its less about pleasing your boss and more about pleasing the client and presenting a rationale to explain your thinking. I was also allowed to do a writing job where I had to write an experiential article which is something I have not done before but the new experience proved to be a good opportunity to learn something new.

Week 2: For the second week, I think I was still adjusting to internship life which was quit different from university life. This week, I was assigned another writing task which was to write an article about Louis Braille and it was very fun to do.

In comparison to the topic last week, this one allowed me to give my own narrative since it was more of an informative article which allowed me to be more descriptive. The rest of the week was spent finding pictures for the previous Sarawak article and then the user testing. The user testing opened my eyes to how to much thought and precision is take into account when designing a major scale website.

Week 3: This week started with a bang and since I'm already a foreigner, I felt like I spent the whole day touristing. We were assigned a task to go around and find specific malaysian delicacies and photograph the. We spent the whole day driving around and finding the foods and since we found them we had to eat them also.

The fish head noodles were my favourite, but by the end of the day, the sight of food made me feel nauseous. The rest of the week was pretty relaxed, on wednesday, I was asked to review the final draft of the article and to see if all the pictures matched or if I could find any other pictures that went with it before it went live.

There were a few mix ups with the tribes and their pictures so I pointed that out and found the last few pictures which I thought went with the article. Friday was the busiest day, since we had to user test the website again, I was also asked to help my colleague add more activities for this event proposal and then finally the CNY illustration. I don't have a lot of confidence in my drawing skill just yet so the fact that my illustration was used and sent out really made my day.

Week 4: This week was very very relaxed, I guess everyone was still in the holiday mood from the CNY break but I was assigned very small tasks such as finding pngs but since it was a wild west theme, I felt like my hours scrolling through pinterest looking for stage design finally paid off.
However, friday was a bit stressful than the rest of the week since the proposal design had to be done and I actually ended up staying after work hours to finish it up but it was fun to make. I think this week was the week I finally became accustomed to internship and the work life and started to enjoy it.

Not that I wasn't enjoying it before, there were just aspects between internship and university which I had to compare and contrast, once I had figured them out. In the beginning, when I was going home, I felt a little weird since I had nothing to do when I got home. Now when I go home, I feel like a character from a book where I kick off my shoes, shower, get a cup of tea and just sit in my bed with a book and just have a chill night which I never had with university.

Week 5: This week was a very new experience, it started off with fixing the Kiduro logo and tuesday was spent sorting out the mall itinerary. Wednesday, came with a bang, since I was told to make a layout and to think of features and this was allowed to do whatever I wanted.

I was quite proud of myself since my work got approved and realised that as this internship has progressed, I've become a bit more confident. The process of getting the final layout was a slow and steady development from indesign to XD but it worked out at the end.

One of my weaknesses is web and app design but things worked out and my supervisor was very pleased with me, so Mr.Shamsul if you're reading this, I DID IT!.

Week 6: This week, I pretty much did the same thing the whole week which was work on the layouts and features for each of the articles. I was really focused in getting them done because I thought I was working slowly but it was on thursday when my supervisor told me I was working at good pace. Hearing that only motivated me more and I finished the ten articles by friday.

Half way through the week, I did start to get a bit frustrated because I was doing the same thing and it got a but repetitive but I sucked it up and finished my task. I wanted to finish it up by friday so when i came in the week after, I wouldn't be stressed about how I hadn't finished my work and would be able to spend my weekend without worrying about the unfinished work I had.

Having finished the ten articles before going home, I felt really happy with myself since I managed to finish off my own little week 6 goal

Week 7: This week, was pretty relaxed in comparison to the previous weeks, but I found myself stuck in a little rut when I had to come up with the captions for all the pictures because at one point my brain went into over drive and I forgot how to write. My brain blanked out half way and the idea of grammar and spelling disappeared from my mind.

However, I slapped the english language back into my head and took a break and finished up the captions and showed them the copy writers who advised me and helped me fix the captions. The fact that the captions had been completed meant the coding for the articles would finally start and I was excited to see the layout and features come to life but coding takes time so I don't know I'll be able to see the articles brought to life.

Week 8: Walking on monday, I really hoped this week would be a bit easier but the opposite happened. I was told to design and think of a layout for a section of the VM2020 website that would encourage the readers to write and share their own articles. Unlike my confusion for the experiential layout, I was more experienced and ran around getting opinions from the content writers about what kind of experience they would like.

I ran back and forth and once I had enough information, I started sketching out my work flow and it took me awhile until I found the flow, if that makes any sense. This week was also the official last week of internship and looking back at it, I've gotten better at a lot of things such as layouts and I've also learnt to make my creative thinking  comprehensible for everyone else around me.
