Community Service Initiative
Week 1
28/08/2020
No class this week.
Week 2
04/09/2020
This week, Mr.Charles gave us a briefing about the module. He explained how we would have to work with an NGO and help promote their services. He told us we had to choose NGOs who were registered and then introduced us to NGOs such as cti.org.my
He told us that for next week, we had to make a timeline for our project timeline and list two NGOs we wanted to work with. The last thing he told us to do was to make our groups.
Week 3
11/09/2020
This week, we showed Mr.Charles our timeline and our choices of NGOs. We decided between Suka Society, Malaysian Animal Welfare and Paws. After Discussing as a group, we decided to go with the Malaysian Animal Welfare.
1.1 Timeline
Since we had decided the NGO, the next step was to email the NGO which we did. We also created our interview questions which we would send out to the NGO once we got a response from the prospective NGO.
1.2 Email
Week 4
18/09/2020
We were a little behind schedule this week since none of the NGOs we had emailed got back to us. Mr.Charles, advised us to email a few more and gave us contacts of NGOs he had worked with to help us out. However, we did manage to get a responses from SOLs Mental Health and set up and interview with them for the coming week.
Week 5
25/09/2020
This week was our first meeting with SOLs and we were briefed about what they wanted from us. They asked us to assist them in creating visuals for an upcoming campaign they were planning. For the month of October, which holds World Mental Health Day, they wanted to launch a campaign where the public shared their experiences with mental illnesses. This would be done in the sense that Sols would receive stories, which would be storyboarded and then made into visuals. Our storyboarding members met with the Sols storyboarding team to create and finalise the storyboard for the first story.
1.3 First Storyboard
Week 6
02/10/2020
This week, we presented our mood board the Sols team to finalise a design for the characters that would be used for the visual stories. We finalised on using monsters for the characters since they would lighten the intense stories that would follow.
1.4 Mood Board
Week 7
09/10/2020
This week, we were informed that the Sols team has received the second story which we would start work on once we finished the first one. We showed them our progress with the final character designs and also showed them the layout sketch we would be following.
Week 8
16/10/2020
This week, we submitted the final draft for the first story. Apart from that, we were also told that a submission for the second story had been made and that the story boarding team would need to gather to create a story board. We started creating a mood board and a layout sketch that we would be following for the seconds tory.
Week 9
23/10/2020
Once the mood board and layout sketch had been approved. It was time for us to start drawing and colouring in. For the second story we went with a different art style since the story was about a cancer patient and we thought that we need a lighter art style that portrayed the message of the story without being too heavy for the viewers.
Week 10
30/10/2020
This week was the submission of the second story and with that we were given the third story. Following our usual line of production, a story board had to be drawn up and a new mood board had to be made since by this point we had established that each story would have its own distinct art style.
Week 11
06/11/2020
This was our second last week with Sols Health and even though we had originally agreed to only do three stories with them. We agreed to take one last final story. However, for this story, they would be providing us with the storyboard.
Week 12
13/11/2020
This was our final week with Sols and the meeting was kept short as we only said our good byes and updated them on the progress of the final story. Apart from that, our journey with them came to an end and it was time to bid them adieu.
Week 13
20/11/2020
Final Slides compilation
Isaac Lee: Thanks to this module, the overall experience is quite insightful as we get a glimpse of what goes in a person's mind, what are their thoughts, how they think and feel as an individual. It's not everyday you get to hear about other people's story and their struggles. It's really brave of them to speak up about their issues and sharing their stories knowing the fact that they might get frowned, and I really respected them for that.
Thooba: Working along with SOLS Health made me more open minded and appreciate the severity and impotence of wellbeing of mental health and mental health awareness. It is something people need to appreciate and talk more about.
Afsah: Before this module started, I didn't really know what to expect and we got off to a rocky start where we couldn't find an NGO. However, Sols turned out to be a miracle in disguise. They needed us and we needed them and the campaign we worked on was a very meaningful one. I personally feel very strongly about mental health and getting to work on a campaign promoting mental health was worth it. I was part of the story boarding team which meant meeting up every week with the storyboarding team to split up the stories into panels and list down what had to be illustrated. Seeing the end product was worth it and working together with my group was also very fulfilling. We all got along great which really helped our group dynamic and the team at Sols were also very understanding. I was sad to say goodbye to the team at the end but all good things must come to an end.
JQ: Through this semester is quite fresh for me not only is a new module but is fully online. Firstly, I wanted to thanks all the lecturers and the person in charge of our project for their responsibility and efforts. Weekly consultation and feedbacks are very efficient which make us can work more sufficiently in a systematic manner. In this module , I felt that I am very weak while giving concept or ideas in the beginning of the project. Thanks to my teammate for spend a lot effort to set up the concept that we are going to do. As responsible in the illustration task, I felt quite packed since it was very hard to distribute tasks to different to different illustrator since we need to synchronize the artstyle. I learned different artstyle and its quite interesting since different story have different artstyle to try. In short, it was an amazing experience for illustrating stories that bring out the good moral and theory.
Kang Jiet (Rachael): Among all the different organisations, we choose to work with Sols Health, which is a non-profit organisation that provides accessible and affordable mental health services with an emphasis on combating the stigma of mental health in Malaysia. Their aimed is to raise awareness for people to recognise mental health issues, symptoms, how it affects people.
Our group were to assist SOLS Health in creating visuals for World Mental Health Day that will be held on october. They planned to held a social media campaign that allows people to share their stories and experiences with mental health issues. Sols Health team will choose stories and arrange it, and our team was helping them to do the storyboarding and create visuals illustrations of those stories for them to post on social media such as Instagram and Facebook for the World Mental Health Day.
Along the learning journey, we learnt a lot about mental health which we get to know that people are struggling from mental health issues and how they manage to overcome it. My group was really nice to work with, our group work was always assign well and we manage to help out each other in order to finish our task efficiently and on time. In conclusion I learn a lot of new things throughout this subject, it was a really meaningful experience for me also my group member by helping out Sols Health to create illustration for those meaningful stories in order to share it with more people. I hope that we will all gain from the learning process and improves ourselves to become a better individuals.
Izac Low: My experience doing this module was great, I've learnt many thing about cooperation and team work with my group mates. I wished i did better in communicating with my groupmates and managing my schedule because if i did it better i'm sure we could have made better results in our work. The experience of working with solshealth was interesting. Their goal was clear and meaningful which even inspired me to continue volunteering for them after this module. The only regret was to be doing this during the unfortunate pandemic. I believe that hands on work would serve as a better learning experience.
